After much research we found that insulating the inner walls and second floor wasn't going to do much in the way of sound proofing or energy efficiency so we spent that $1000 on a security system instead.
After having been broken into once (while at home) it was an easy choice. I don't mind the sounds of a lively home flowing through the walls as long as we are all safe and sound.
