After much persuasion Lynn committed me to participate in the blog documenting our build. I must preface my participation with a disclaimer. For all of the excitement a build generates it also creates a fair amount of headache and frustration. For that reason I cannot guarantee a PG rating. Consider yourself fairly warned.
Why we decided to build:
1. My most time consuming hobby has become watching TV shows like Flip That House and This Old House w/ Bob Villa. I couldn't stand to just watch anymore.
2. From an investment standpoint it makes sense: more house per dollar than buying an existing house, market is down (i.e. lumber and labor is cheap), get exactly what we want out of a house--nothing more or less.
3. Learning process: I'd like to build again in the future acting as my own contractor (our contractor on this job will make 20% of the total build). Flipping houses my be a fun side money making project in the not so distant future.
4. Distract us from the pains of being forced from the mother land, Hawaii.
5. Found the perfect lot. Great neighborhood will help retain value. Ideal location w/ respect to proximity to work , shopping, freeway, etc.
6. The chance for infinite DIY projects.
There is an open invitation to anyone who would like to get their hands dirty and learn a bit. If you're coming from out of town we'll even provide housing if you don't mind sharing a one-bathroom 600 sq ft apt w/ a family of four.

Nice to hear from you too Ben. Good luck with everything.
Cheers
It's not 600 sq ft Ben, it's 796.
sounds good to me. so you have to sacrifice a bit, to say the least, to get the reward. isn't that what life is all about.
No wonder your at the lot constantly. . .I would be willing that house building process all the way to a speedy completion with such cramped quarters. How exciting for you. Fernando would love and I mean LOVE to help. Too bad we are so far away. (May be you are counting your blessings. It's always better to practice on someone else's home)
